EBOO Treatment: Advanced Integrative Blood Ozonation Therapy

Understand EBOO treatments, an advanced ozone therapy for blood purification and immune modulation. Enhance oxygen delivery & remove toxins. Inquire about EBOO!

Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation (EBOO) is a new method in regenerative and integrative medicine that mixes dialysis and ozone therapy. By cleaning the blood and carefully exposing it to ozone, the goal is to enhance oxygen delivery to tissues, adjust the immune system, and help remove toxins from cells.

What is EBOO?

EBOO is a specialized form of intravenous ozone therapy. The treatment involves drawing blood from the patient, filtering it to remove toxins, and enriching it with a mixture of oxygen and ozone. Subsequently, the treated blood is reintroduced into the body. By using the patient's own blood, there is no risk of rejection or side effects related to blood transfusions. This process is conducted in a closed system, minimizing the risk of contamination and maximizing therapeutic benefits.

Origin and history and technological evolution

The first EBOO trials date back to the second half of the 20th century and have evolved significantly:

  • 1950s–60s: first trials of blood ozonation for the treatment of wounds and sepsis.
  • Dr. Velio Bocci (1980–90): established standardized protocols for major and minor autohemotherapy.
  • Current situation: closed and automated systems that ensure precise doses of ozone and constant flows of oxygen.

Physicochemical Fundamentals of Ozone

  1. Structure and reactivity: O₃ is a trivalent gas that, when dissolved in plasma, releases a highly reactive oxygen atom (free radical).
  1. Selective oxidation: it focuses on eliminating toxic compounds (lipoperoxides, oxidative stress metabolites) and activates antioxidant pathways in endothelial cells.
  1. Redox signaling triggers an adaptive response that increases the production of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase.

Detailed description of the EBOO procedure

  1. Venipuncture: 1.5–3 L of blood are extracted in a closed circuit. In a closed circuit, 1.5–3 L of blood are drawn during venipuncture.
  1. Dialytic filtration: a process using a special dialyzer that traps toxins, cytokines that cause inflammation, and parts of cells.
  1. Contact with oxygen/ozone mixture: blood recirculation through an ozone chamber with concentration adjusted according to the patient's weight and conditions.
  1. Slow reinfusion: return of purified and oxygen-enriched blood, improving transport capacity to tissues.
  1. Duration and frequencies: each session lasts 60–90 minutes; typical weekly schedule for 4 weeks, then biweekly or monthly depending on progress.

Biochemical and clinical mechanisms of action

  • Detoxification: breaking down toxic compound bonds, facilitating their excretion by the liver and kidneys.
  • Improvement of microcirculation: reduction of plasma viscosity, increase of nitric oxide, and capillary vasodilation.
  • Regulation of the immune system: boosting anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10), activating M2 macrophages, and managing regulatory T cells.
  • Mitochondrial stimulation: improvement in the efficiency of the respiratory chain and increase in intracellular ATP.

Therapeutic indications and selection criteria

  • Autoimmune diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus erythematosus.
  • Post-COVID syndrome (Long COVID): reduction of systemic inflammation and improvement in exercise tolerance.
  • Peripheral vascular disease: intermittent claudication, ischemic ulcers.
  • Toxicity from heavy metals: patients exposed to mercury, lead, or organophosphates.
  • Chronic infections by biotoxins: mold, Borrelia burgdorferi in persistent Lyme.

Clinical evidence and observational outcomes

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: pilot studies show a reduction in joint pain and inflammatory markers after 6 sessions—8weeks.
  • Long COVID: cohorts of patients referred to integrative medicine units report a 60% improvement in fatigue and dyspnea after a 4-week EBOO protocol.
  • Peripheral artery disease: increased ankle-brachial index (ABI) and reduced claudication distance in walking tests.

Key benefits of EBOO therapy

Deep detoxification

With proper planning and implementation, EBOO treatment can help remove toxins, heavy metals, and pathogens from the bloodstream, which can be beneficial for patients with chronic illnesses or exposure to biotoxins.

Enhanced immune system support

Ozone therapy can stimulate the production of cytokines and other immunomodulatory molecules, strengthening the immune system's response to infections and autoimmune diseases.

Reduced inflammation

By improving oxygenation and eliminating inflammatory agents, EBOO can contribute to the reduction of systemic inflammation, alleviating symptoms associated with various inflammatory conditions.

Improvement of circulation and oxygen supply

EBOO therapy optimizes blood flow and its ability to transport oxygen, which can improve the function of organs and tissues.

More energy and mental clarity

Patients have reported increases in energy levels and improvements in concentration and mental clarity after EBOO sessions, due to better brain oxygenation.

Tissue regeneration

By improving oxygenation and reducing the toxic load, EBOO can support the natural processes of tissue regeneration and repair.

Potential considerations and safety

EBOO is well tolerated when administered by trained professionals and in appropriate clinical settings. However, as with any medical procedure, there are safety considerations:

  • Mild side effects: Some patients may experience nausea, a metallic taste in the mouth, or a feeling of warmth during the treatment.
  • Contraindications: People with certain medical conditions, such as G6PD deficiency, bleeding disorders, or those taking anticoagulants, should consult their doctor before undergoing EBOO.
  • Precautions: in severe anemias, active leukemias, or decompensated acute infections.

Integration with other therapies in Mitogenesis

At Mitogenesis, we integrate EBOO with different therapies to achieve better results and provide holistic treatment for each patient.

  • Combination with functional nutrition: adjustment of dietary antioxidants to enhance redox effects.
  • Physical support: vascular physiotherapy and supervised exercise to consolidate the improvement of microcirculation.
  • Multidisciplinary follow-up: periodic meetings between the integrative doctor, cardiologist, and nutritionist.

Trends and future developments

  • Guided tissue microzonization: direct injection of ozone into joints or intervertebral discs.
  • Ozonation of liposuctions: application in aesthetic medicine and soft tissue regeneration.
  • Combined therapies: EBOO together with mesenchymal stem cells to enhance tissue repair.

EBOO in Mitogenesis
